Front Royal Grotto History

By Rex Tinkham

In 1991, after living in Front Royal, Va., for a number of years, Rex and Janet Tinkham decided they wanted to reach out and expand their caving network. They had been caving for many years and wanted to meet people in the area who had the same interest.

They thought, what's a better way than forming a local grotto?

In September of 1991, after going through the formal application with the NSS Internal Organization Committee, the Front Royal Grotto received its charter and it was official. The founding members were Rex and Janet Tinkham, Rob Lindquist, Steve Lindquist, Anne Durica and Bob Stelzner. Letters were sent to NSS members living in the area informing them about the new grotto and invited them to the first meeting to be held at the Quality Inn in Front Royal.

Over the years the grotto has grown to an average membership of 45-50 people. Folks come and go, but some of the original members that still maintain their membership are: Ed and Lynn Richardson, Cady Soukup, Steve Valentine, Lauren Rexford, Ellie Florance, Steve Lindquist, and Rex & Janet Tinkham.
